Certified through 2024 as a licensed hand therapist, Gregory F. Caffiero provides rehabilitative therapy for hands and arms. To improve his professional acumen, Gregory Caffiero attends annual meetings of the American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS). Throughout 2020, AAHS offered its members the chance to participate in volunteer service programs in the developing world. Areas served included:
Nepal In March 2020, a surgeon and therapist taught for 10 days at Kitipur Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. They trained local medical personnel in procedures for the brachial plexus and peripheral nerves, with time divided evenly between academics and surgery. Ecuador In conjunction with ReSurge International, AAHS helped lay the groundwork for long-term surgical care by educating nurses, physical therapists, and doctors. In April, groups of one to four people tailored their instruction to local needs in reconstructive surgery, nursing, and anesthesia. Fiji In May 2020, a surgeon representing the Loloma Foundation handled fractures of the fingers and hand. In addition, therapists and nursed offered support in screening and managing pre- and post-operative conditions. Zambia SurgiCore, an agency that primarily treats burns and deformities, provided space for 20 to 25 volunteers at the Beit Center in Lusaka in September. Ghana (various dates) Surgical volunteers served at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasa. Working in the operating room and the clinic, they trained hand surgeons, physiotherapists, and students in the latest interventions.
